A Resilient Airport

Air travel today is characterized by wastefulness, heavy fossil fuel use, congestion, and stress, reflecting an assumption of unlimited resources. However, as populations rise and resources dwindle, airports must evolve to address impending challenges. This project envisions a resilient airport for Hong Kong in 2075, designed to tackle the critical issues of climate change, food scarcity, population growth, and rapid urbanization while accommodating increased passenger and cargo demands.

Hong Kong International Airport is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with its site projected to face severe flooding from rising sea levels. The Resilient Airport integrates productive, sustainable solutions to ensure longevity and efficiency. Large green spaces, vertical farming, and agriculturally productive landscapes reconnect occupants with nature, highlighting its critical role in human existence.

Food production is central to the design, addressing future scarcity by creatively utilizing every inch of space, including vertical farms within concourses. This innovative typology reimagines airports as self-sustaining hubs, merging waterfront development, dense urban practices, and traditional food production to enhance occupant well-being and resilience in the face of future challenges.
